and you're also leaving out the Peter Thiel backing of Facebook ... Peter Thiel was also behind Palantir, a company that sells domestic spying software to dozens of world governments (including the US and Israel). He also provided a significant amount of funding to Rumble.

@Jojothegoodperson @yuki2501 @louis @ramin_hal9001 Well, they can't see us, Jojo. I have some commentary, though.

> I don't know why you think we're gullible enough to believe Facebook is well intentioned

They have absolutely the worst intentions, I'm certain.

> or well be destroyed.

No, that's stupid. This person is melodramatic. The fact is that Facebook cannot actually do anything to budge fedi an inch.

> Why should we TRUST facebook?

Someone on "hackers.town" should think a little more clearly than this. You don't run in circles responding to vague threats just because you're in the vicinity of a bad actor. It's lunatic behavior. You assess the threat. What could they do, in concrete terms? I don't see anything. There is no threat from Facebook. The closest I have seen to something concrete is Moon saying that they could mine data. I don't know why they'd be mining fedi's data (they have an ocean of their own data) but if they look like they're doing this, then there are solutions to that.

Facebook doesn't care about fedi: the likely target is Twitter. Twitter was unpopular before, then Elon took over, a lot of people fucked off to fedi (not a lot in terms of Twitter's userbase, but fedi's population grew by about 50%), then Twitter paywalls the whole thing and suddenly Facebook announces that they're gonna start doing ActivityPub. Don't get me wrong: "Facebook doesn't care about fedi" cuts both ways. They certainly wouldn't care about ruining the place. If this is more about Twitter than about fedi, then Facebook doesn't care who instance-blocks them, none of that shit matters. They have a competitor that is weaker than usual so they're taking some shots.

> As a corporation, if Facebook wants to do something bad, it will.

This applies to literally anyone on fedi.

> If Facebook cannot be held accountable, it cannot be trusted.

You don't trust a roach, but you don't run screaming in terror like a lunatic if you see one: you spray it. This person isn't just waving their arms in the air like they've set their hair on fire, they're also accusing people of being pro-roach for *not* panicking.

> Besides, why are you implying that joining Facebook has any advantages at all for us?

Sloppy, panicked thinking; see attached. The reason people make deals with the devil is that the devil sometimes promises to give you something you want. Nobody would be talking to Facebook if there were *zero* advantages for anyone involved. I would not make a deal with Facebook, and I don't think anyone ought to, but that's not the same as saying there are zero advantages to doing it.

There are advantages to smoking crack (allegedly it is fun). That's not to say it's a good idea (it also is addictive, turns you into a toothless lunatic, etc) but it's disingenuous to say there are zero advantages, and it's a shitty tactic to yell at someone for failing to adopt your worldview without question.

> if Facebook sponsors instances, it's effectively controlling them

This is accurate. This is why FSE does not even take donations.

> The point of the fediverse is not to cover the world, it's to have a space safe from fascism and corporate power.

People should, in general, speak for themselves instead of dictating to other people. I'm not here to have a safe space from fascism: it is the internet, fascists can't hurt me no matter which part of it I visit. Facebook can't hurt me, fascists can't hurt me, communists can't hurt me, idiots can't hurt me. I am here because I do not want censorship, I don't want surveillance or ads, I don't like the mall-internet that the San Francisco Data Cartel is pushing on us. I like talking to interesting people, and I can relax here, because nobody can stop me from saying anything, because I am not borrowing Twitter's servers to communicate.

> So you and your sockpuppets can fuck off. You're not welcome here.

This tedious asshole starts with "How dare you question me?!", proceeds to dictate rules to the network, and then presumes the authority to decide who is welcome on fedi. It's all so tiresome. Don't fall for it: just let the lunatics yell, this is the kind of person that can be safely ignored.

@EricZhang456 @PhenomX6

You know what I think?

I think all these platforms are getting AP or federation compatible, not because they want to be on fediverse, but because they want to communicate with each other.

Like blue sky and threads will probably work out a protocol handshake or something, tumblr at one point said they were getting AP support. If they all want to stay relevant with each other, cause nobody really wants to sign into multiple apps/platforms.

Like I think they really don't give a shit about federating with loliconaryan1488@groomed.children.ranch or whoever.

I think fedi users just have spotlight effect.

@PraxisOfEvil @RMIV Reminder that America is a huge territory and our Founders often thought it might go on to become multiple countries. There is still a great American nation within us even if it might not be composed of the whole current US territory, and it is up to us to awaken the strength of our forebears to seize it.

@Pawlicker I've been here for around a year (I think) and it's really starting to pop off.

The fedi is the future.

If you are afraid about the fedi becoming mainstream, just use twtxt for a more niche experience.

>Twitter locked viewing the damn site during HAPPENING in west, right as rumors swirl about Twitter not paying bills
>One of the largest JP instances has to close regs due to massive influx of new users, ask for money to boost to hold more users
>FB is using ActivityPub soon to make Twitter clone

You might not like this but IMO this is a larger change to the culture than Poa.st or musk buying Twitter. This is the moment when the fedi will truly boom IMO. The next year is going to be really fucking interesting.
