it's crazy to me that there are some insane guys out there still running PCs that don't have AVX2 or DX12 support. then they expect brand new releases to support their hardware. like bro... even if it did support your hardware, the game would be running at like 20fps using minimum settings and a hacked low resolution or some shit. like, imagine trying to downport a ps5 game to a ps3. it is time to upgrade....

@beardalaxy yes I do expect all new releases to run flawlessly the same way as all PS5 releases (like, one of them) would run on PS3 💅 like, not my job to upgrade because the devs are lazy and do not optimise their UE5 bloatware

@tomie I mean, there are games that can't even run at max settings that came out around the time that hardware was relevant because they were using shit like tress fx lol. It took another couple years for people to be able to safely enable it for tomb raider and Witcher 3's hairworks. You're right, there is a lot of bloat, but there are also a lot of new technologies that rely on calls and such just not available on older hardware. Maybe they could be back ported but that's a lot of dev work for such a small amount of players.

Then you have me who is working on an engine from 2015 that I can't update to support some features or it will break shit xD

@beardalaxy
Well, I am more pissed about the old technologies that we still are not using.
Physics in games stopped at boobs, but bendable metals were in The force unleashed, and it ended there. Same about adaptable ragdolls.

Oh... Do you remember Carmagedon? That game from last millennia? I wonder what car destruction looks now in ganes... Oh no... all the cars are indestructible AGAIN???

Studios decided to hire 1000 cheap devs instead of 20 good devs so all you get now is more bloat.

Also nobody wants to learn to write fast code in fast languages anymore, but that's a side issue.

@amerika @LukeAlmighty @gentoobro unless it's emulators or reverse engineering n64 games for some reason

A few of us can, and we'll be the only ones that know how after GenX dies. Zoomers can't even type...

@gentoobro @LukeAlmighty @beardalaxy There could be some hope with the ongoing trend of portable handheld PCs, where devs have an incentive to optimizing for mobile CPUS/GPUs. The older hardware like those old NVIDIA GTX graphics cards are what I'm more concerned about however since they're still neglected (mostly) for stuff like RTX and are still mainly proprietary, especially on Linux.

They get away with it because graphics have been "good enough" for a decade or so. Nowadays you only buy a better video card in order to play the increasingly bloated slop shoveled out by big studios with the same or worse graphics as 10 years ago. They'll just remove quality from the handlheld versions until it runs ok and gamers will accept it because what else can they do?

Raster graphics isn't going anywhere. Raytracing is a fancy toy that gives really cool results in Minecraft and slightly better lighting everywhere else but at tremendous processing cost. Meanwhile, the army of discount shortbus devs they hired can't manage to make destructible environments like Red Faction 2 on the original Xbox.

@gentoobro @berkberkman @beardalaxy
LOOK AT IT!!!
This is the gaming I was looking forward to 15 years ago.

15 years... My god... How far have we fallen...

@gentoobro @LukeAlmighty @beardalaxy I can tell you whether a game is going to be good or bad. Just tell me the developers' sex and race.

@LukeAlmighty games went from being about adding features for gameplay to adding graphics for fidelity.
