An atheist here, who went through a few ceremons. Although, I am an atheist for a different reason.
But ceremons do NOTHING for someone who doesn't belive. Hearing about Jesus's love for example is like hearing about the government that helps you...
No matter how you argue it, you are wasting your life away listening to stories that mean nothing to you. So, I get, how that did grow a ton of resentment.
Also, try to combine it to the world we grew up in. It was the world, where authority figures shat on our heads the entire time. So, listening to yet another authority to say how they care, just to ignore all the problems... again.... was not as persuasive as you might hope :D

Average soldier is unironically the kind of person, who is willing to simp to his death. That's the point of the job. To fill your head with bullshit simple enough, that you go across the world to shoot people.
