I mean... There was a moment, where he mis-judged a situation, and literally sent 2 of his followers to death, but it wasn't played for laughs. He truly suffered from the realization, that adventuring isn't easy, and he changed his world view immediately.

That is literally the base of all good stories.
And it isn't even what everyone is complaining about.
