@PhenomX6 @xianc78 @deprecated_ii it's important to keep it refined, but if someone wanted to include something political in their game, I wouldn't want to stifle that specific discussion per se. It's the random bullshit political threads that are gay.
@PhenomX6 @xianc78 @deprecated_ii and by "game's thread" I mean a game from one of the users, not people talking about random AAA games not made by users on the site.
@PhenomX6 @xianc78 @deprecated_ii I think that's not exactly the best idea, because you can still have political themes, even modern ones, in a video game. Personally, I just wouldn't want people discussing politics outside of a game's thread and if it turns into flaming that's where it stops.
@xianc78 oh yeah that's a definite.
I don't speak for everyone, but I think the majority of people complaining about woke shit in games don't really want games that combat the woke shit, they want games that just don't have the woke shit in it.
Based devs helps too, though, when stacked on a game that's just a game. Take the recent interview with FFXVI's director or whatever, talking about how the are pretty much going to only be white people in the game because it is representative of the region the game takes place in. That's an answer that infuriates the people who would be asking that question, but we like to hear that because it means the focus isn't on pandering, it's about the actual game.
Maybe that's a bad example because the current state of Square Enix dictates there will probably be something woke in the game anyway, but you get what I'm going for I'm sure.
@AmbersWorld I'm not in your DMs but I am in your walls
@heyarnold @xianc78 we're already on an instance with "game" in the title lol ;)
@xianc78 yeah it gets combative and extreme, which makes the other side more combative and extreme. Nobody wants to play a game that exists solely to shit on people and that's something I think the right tends to fuck up on. The politically correct still make amazing games, they just have weird trans propaganda in them and shit like a character being non-binary being listed in their bio and they just exist to be a token of inclusivity or something.
Games made by explicitly right wing people just tend to be way too overbearing and they feel like ass to actually play. It ends up just being kind of tacky.
Ughhhhgghghgghhhfg I have work from 3-12 today and I've only had 3 hours of sleep, idk if it's possible for me to get in any sleep before then.
I really don't understand why my body won't just actually sleep for very long. I'll be so fucking tired I can't keep my eyes open only to wake up 2-3 hours later.
@xianc78 if it's something you're serious about, I'd be down to talk about it and try to help contribute. I think a big thing would be focusing on the games over anything else. It irks me when forums or discord servers have a politics section because it just causes problems where people get vitriolic and/or it becomes an echo chamber that permeates to the rest of the community that's there.
@LukeAlmighty yeah bringing up computers causing problems immediately isn't the best way to strike conversation with a rando.
It's better to ask questions based on things you might notice about them that they can then ask you about. Ask about their job and what they like or dislike about it, you'll likely immediately find things to relate with and maybe crack a joke about. If they have a tattoo you can ask what the story behind it is and go from there. Something I've noticed a lot is that people ask where I'm from, and then I ask them, and we compare the places we live and why we like them or what brought us there. As cliche as it sounds, talking about the weather isn't that bad as long as you can add something to it or crack a joke about it instead of just a plain observation (add some personality). If it's the weekend, asking if they have any plans and then reacting to whatever they say positively is good. Even if they just say "ah I'm just working" you can still say it's good to keep busy, but that it's good to get some rest too.
Over everything, just keep the conversation positive. You don't want to dwell on anything negative and it definitely shouldn't be the conversation starter. More serious or theoretical/existential topics can happen later, and happen naturally.
The last girlfriend I had, I started talking to about the musicians on stage at an open mic. Then I got to ask what her favorite was and why, and since I like music a lot we could go back and forth on it. That ended up going toward a song she heard in a penguin documentary and I found out she liked penguins, so on our first date I gave her a little penguin plush. The only time we got into more serious talks was when it was just the two of us alone, driving at night from somewhere or sitting at a fire when the mood and timing was right.
@xianc78 some of the old blood hasn't changed, but the platforms available definitely have their issues.
@Corfiot I can't really take a screenshot of nothing xD but I'll explain what it is I added. I'm creating side quests right now.
Game design: less can be more
I tried playing the new God of War, and by that I mean the first one, back when it came out. I didn't think it was too bad, although I prefer the originals.
The second I got to that upgrade screen, though... I stopped playing. It was overwhelming. I think it's likely just the way it was presented. I don't remember it too much, but iirc it seemed really exhaustive and had too much detail crammed into it, as well as not having a lot of contrast between the UI elements. There were a bunch of tabs for all the different things you could upgrade, a bunch of different stuff they did, and even Atreyus had a whole upgrade tree.
If the upgrade stuff would have happened a bit more naturally throughout the gameplay, I think I would have kept playing. It was all dumped on me at once and it didn't feel like it was built up at all.
As stupid as it sounds, very often, less is more. Just today I ran into that at a food place, where I just got one of the menu items but my mom got a create-your-own and spent a long time trying to figure out exactly what ingredients she wanted. It's nice to have the freedom to choose anything you want from a huge list of stuff, but having a much more refined amount of options will usually end up being more satisfying. There have been studies done on this, too.
There's also the point that I'm just not as interested in God of War as I might be something else. If I'm getting a salad or sandwich I'll stick to something simple, but if I'm getting a pizza I'll custom order the shit out of it because I love pizza.
If I could change it, I'd probably scale back the amount of upgrades you can actually obtain. Make the upgrades take a little longer to get, but make them more impactful and things that will directly change the way you play the game instead of just specific stat increases. By the end of the game you'll have got pretty much all of them, and so you'll have a wide variety of things you can do that have built upon each other, and if you have a higher percentage unlocked it doesn't matter if you can actually do more or not, you'll feel more powerful.
A lot of this stuff is psychological, and certain people will have an easier time with these things or just not notice them at all, or they will notice the flaw but power through it because they enjoy the rest of the game. As someone who has well over 100 unplayed games on steam, though, there's always something else I can play if I'm not jiving with something. It's rare I'll continue playing a game I don't like unless I've already put a decent amount of hours into it and it seems like I'm close to the end anyway (howlongtobeat is my best friend).
I wonder how many other people felt that way about the upgrade system, whether they stopped playing because of it or not.
@dead_man citation needing deez nuts
@nosleep i hate this. they just keep stunting the fuck out of mobile websites so that you'll download their fucking app. i don't want an app lurking on my phone just taking up space when the website works perfectly fine. or should i say WORKED, because for some reason it's been downgraded to show me like 3 pop ups of how i need to download the app or some shit.
and food places too. every single god damn restaurant has an app that you can get points on so you can get a free chicken sandwich after going there 10 times and fiddling with the shitty app, using your mobile data, instead of just pulling out cash and handing it to the god damn cashier.
fuck i hate what smartphones have done to the world
