@LukeAlmighty it's interesting that she doesn't like tetris. i thought moms universally liked tetris and dr mario. the only three games my mom will play are those and ms pac man lol.

@Beholder @matrix @Suzu in the last campaign i played in my bard was a pacifist for about 80% of the adventure. you can make it work.

@xianc78 @Alex mm! Also, the plague is plant-based. It kills plants, which means the animals thin out too and thus the continent begins to starve. So the dead aren't sick or anything, they just die of starvation. I'd imagine their houses would either be untouched, ransacked, or seized by the government depending on where they live.

@xianc78 @Alex some of this is just either beyond the scope of a one man project or things I would have to go back to change and at this point it just isn't feasible to do that unless I want to be here forever (dwarf fortress has been in dev since 2002 and for most of that time it's been a 2-man team). I do actually have diaries and stuff for lore building though! And again, a problem with making too many empty buildings or even just too many buildings in general is that it quickly becomes overwhelming for players with how large maps become. Even in massive open world games, unless it just takes place in a single city like GTA for instance, the towns are relatively small and everything is on a smaller scale. I think Skyrim's scale is something like 1:20000. Better to have smaller, denser experiences otherwise you get something like Daggerfall (larger than Great Britain) which is incredibly daunting. I mean, I have an overworld where you can travel 4 hours by taking one step. There's only so much one developer can do, and there's only so much a player can hold down a button while nothing/very little happens. Or you make some sort of algorithm to generate encounters, but that also gets boring after a while and would be a lot of work for me to add. You need a lot of interesting systems to make travel fun. Not to mention it's just literally not in the style of the game I'm trying to make.

Tl;dr
A) too much work for 1 dev
B) too much time I'd have to spend remaking things, getting stuck in development hell
C) too overwhelming and vast for a typical player while not having enough well-built systems to justify the scope
D) not the genre I'm exactly gunning for, the idea is a game that is like an old JRPG but with more freedom, not a full western rpg

@LukeAlmighty another thing to keep in mind is that i'm not putting a bunch of utter shit on my list lol, they are all games i'm pretty interested in and genuinely want to play eventually.

@LukeAlmighty it's nice to have it listed out like this too because i can still sort by time or my rating on how much i wanted to play it. so if i'm looking for a bit of a longer game i can look for that instead.

@LukeAlmighty it's about tackling the backlog, playing and finishing games you really want to get off your backlog. so, prioritizing shorter games will shrink the backlog pretty fast.

having this list isn't a "you must play these games in this order" either, but it does help sort things out a little bit to help you prioritize things :)

i'm the kind of person who usually gets antsy when a game goes beyond 6-8 hours, too. there are very few exceptions to that. i prefer shorter, tighter experiences, so this list works for me pretty well!

i'm gonna' try sweeping up metroid prime and onirism first because i haven't played either in a while, then i need to move on to ratchet and clank rift apart because my roommate who owns the ps5 is gonna be moving out soon.

but after that i'm going for a bird story, then skylar & plux. little bit further down the list are some touhou games, snake pass, and observer.

think i might try this backlog method out. essentially, it's taking the metacritic scores and dividing them by how long it takes to beat the game, which gives you a "quality per hour" figure. i think i would multiply this by a scale from 1 to 10 on how much i actually want to play the game (which i'll do before seeing the quality score) to get a decent idea of where i should start because, right now, i have no idea what i should play next. i've got tears of the kingdom and system shock to look forward to and that's about it until september with starfield, and i won't even be playing it at launch.

i do wanna play the sweetest monster sequel too soon, it's just a matter of making sure i've got money to buy it :) backlog is gonna' have games i already own on it with a bit of emulation too perhaps.

that said, if you have any games that are in that emulation territory that are really good games, let me know!
