I'm gonna try to clear up a few things
Meta is not gonna buy Mastodon or any server, this is based on absolutely nothing and untrue.
Yes, some of us indeed got contacted by Meta/Insta because they are working on a new social platform (this was in the news) and they are looking into joining the Fediverse (Mark Zuckerberg also told this in the recent podcast)
SO.
This contact was about a "heads-up" for a potential big platform to join the network and not for a "take over".

@beardalaxy @matrix @sjw @shibao Literally the only people who had a problem with the 8chan AMA were the journos, including Youtubers like ReviewTechUSA who made THREE VIDEOS regarding the situation. I've seen a lot of non-8chan users defending THQ and 8chan. At worst, they thought it was "unprofessional" but not something worthy of a boycott. There were also a few other companies who did similar threads on 8chan.
Granted, all of these happened before the three mass shootings linked to 8chan, but fortunately, nothing similar has happened on the Fediverse (and hopefully never will).
@beardalaxy @matrix @sjw @shibao That was THQ Nordic.
@matrix @sjw @beardalaxy @shibao For them or for the instance? There are some game studios who can get away with having a presence on more niche and edgy sites. Running With Scissors literally had an official board on 8chan back in the day. I'm not even joking. And there have been a lot of indie games that have been shilled on imageboards over the years.
@sjw @beardalaxy @matrix @shibao I wish we had more gamedevs on here. I'm pretty sure we can have a few indies on here without destroying their reputation.
@LukeAlmighty That's why I said "besides the Eternal September" which is a reference to Usenet in which an influx of college students started joining because so many college campuses got Internet access back in 1993.
So it seems like the biggest concern about Facebook/Meta creating a Fediverse instance, outside of having an "eternal september" is that the instance might be used to datamine other users on the Fediverse.
As far as I know, they can only datamine public posts or private posts that include users on their instance. And even without their own instance, they can still datamine us by using old-fashion web crawlers or scrapping the APIs.
@beardalaxy @sjw @shibao I don't know if it was actually him. It was only one post saying that some people were pressuring him to join the fediverse, and he never posted anything after that.
When Kiwifarms leaked his passwords a couple of years back, GameLiberty wasn't on there.
@beardalaxy @sjw @shibao I only joined by YandereDev created an account on here, but never used it. I thought that this would be the perfect place to post gamedev stuff.
Remember the times when Linux Foundation actually concerned itself with making Linux a good OS kernel? Instead of creating vaccine passports, fighting climate change, and pushing for "diversity through code" whatever the fuck that means. Good times!
According to the foundation's latest annual report [1], they spent ~1.5x more money on Blockchain than on Linux Kernel. Instead...
>For 2023, we will continue to focus on impact, diversity, and moving the needle on solving big, complex problems, such as climate change, software security, and food security, to push the envelope of technology.
Linux? What Linux?
