@matana obviously you have to do things in moderation and not hover over them and take away all of their privacy because they still deserve some too. But education first and foremost is good. For my kids it'll probably be something like using KeePass so I have access to their passwords, requiring a password to get on the computer that's in the living room, and not giving them a smartphone at age 12 that they can do whatever the fuck on. Will they get around blocks and use stuff at their friends houses? Yeah, probably, but that's what proper education is for, including internet privacy and security :)
And if your community is too small to justify a forum, just get a simple shoutbox or guestbook on your website. Those usually don't require accounts to use so users don't have to jump through hoops just to be a part of your community.
