@moth @realcaseyrollins I meant destiny, not political ideology.
@realcaseyrollins The alt-right's obsession with race and genetics is like astrologists' obsession with zodiac symbols. They really think that your ethnic background determines your destiny.
@h4890@liberdon.com @AtlasFreeman@liberdon.com HAM radio is more like walkie-talkies than AM or FM radio. So frequencies are more like chatrooms than radio stations and people can share frequencies. If you are transmitting computer data, you can have the packets have metadata on who this packet is intended for, so you can filter out senders even if they are on the same frequency. How do you think Wi-Fi is able to communicate with all of the computers on the network with the same frequency?
@AtlasFreeman@liberdon.com No need for infrastructure like ISPs, DNS servers, etc so it's decentralized by its very nature, but the FCC still requires you to have a license to use it even though it's a two-way communication unlike AM or FM. You also need to give any encryption keys to the government if you are sending any encrypted packets.
@coolboymew @sjw@neckbeard.xyz @1iceloops123 @daisuke @fixpoint Companies like HP and Dell sell their computers with Linux preinstalled on their websites. You also have companies like Think Penguin and System76 which only sell Linux computers.
>And anything free and open source is technically all software tinkering, isn't it?
No, it means that the source code is available and you are free to distribute exact or modified copies both commercially and non-commercially. A program can have it's source code available without being "open-source". You can even tinker with closed-source software with reverse-engineering.
@fixpoint @sjw@neckbeard.xyz @1iceloops123 @coolboymew @daisuke I guess it's easier for corporations to push laws like this in third world countries than in the developed world.
@coolboymew @sjw@neckbeard.xyz @1iceloops123 @daisuke @fixpoint I think you can still legally purchase computers with Linux pre-installed though. If you want a worse case, in Egypt, free/libre and open-source software of any kind is illegal and everyone is basically forced to be customers of the big 5 tech giants.
@saiferion @quad I feel like people join the Fediverse for different reasons than Twitter or Facebook. Honestly, this feels more like a forum than a social network.
@realcaseyrollins @mewmew The ones I go to are generally 4 ft deep. I guess there are so many liability and legal issues when you don't have lifeguards.
@realcaseyrollins @mewmew I'm pretty nostalgic for hotels as well, but I do have a lot of bad memories.
My mom is a huge germophobe, especially when it comes to hotels, so she would strip the blankets off the beds and we slept with just sheets (in hindsight I we should've brought our own blankets). Also, I was always the one designated to sleep on the floor if there were not enough beds.
However, I really love the hotel room smell and I always liked how clean the bathrooms are. I just wish their swimming pools were deeper.
@saiferion @quad Also, I think we can strongly discourage people from using these apps by mocking Instagram and TickTock stars, and make them look like self-absorbed assholes. People used to do the same thing with bloggers back in the mid-2000s.
@saiferion @quad I'm fine as long as I'm not forced to use it. I just wish people would think before they join a new social network especially one coming from China.
@quad I think mobile oriented social media like Instagram, SnapChat, and TikTok is the absolute worst. Literally just shitty 5 second videos or slideshows with captions. No actual discussion.
Social media would be 1000x less cancerous without smartphones. Granted, posting via SMS on dumbphones would probably still exist, but it would be a lot better than what we have now.
@feral_apothecary But riots and vandalism violate the NAP.
@AdamAtSea @Macadelic Which is why decentralized networks will always be superior.
@matrix Some ancaps believe that if enough people collect welfare money while avoiding taxes, it will help the state collapse.
