@LukeAlmighty I've never used a full engine. I always used frameworks like Pygame and MonoGame. I'd say start with something simple like Pygame (Python) or Love2D (Lua). They're simple frameworks for 2D games. The only challenging part is implementing levels, AI, and physics yourself, but it isn't hard as it seems.

@beardalaxy Looks kind of jarring with the HD textures but lack of facial animations/voice acting. It's the same reason I prefer the N64 version of Perfect Dark over the XBLA version.
