Linux Desktop Question:

I currently use a Mac, but I'm thinking my next machine might be a desktop. There's no way I'm gonna use Windows so that means Linux.

I'd like Distro recommendations.

My applications:
1. Brave
2. Thunderbird
3. VSCode
4. Libreoffice
5. Terminal
6. CPU & Memory meters in the top bar

My requirements:

NO BUGS, absolutely not one single bug. I will move heaven and earth to get the thing setup right, but I will not tolerate one single screw-up, no apt-get dependency conflict fuckery, nothing.

I'm open to minimalistic UIs like XFCE or LXDE if they can deliver no bugs. I need control+tab and control+tilda for switching windows.

Any recommendations?

Recently I've been thinking a bit about hydrogen fusion.

The pressure required to make H2 spontaneously fuse is around 250 billion atm, which is enough that there isn't really any material that you can build a suitable piston or cylinder out of.

A recent approach has been to try to force a liquid (in this case a hot metal) to compress a bubble of hydrogen plasma in the hope that as it collapses, the inertia of the liquid will create a shockwave that far surpasses the pressure of the vessel, reaching the target pressure at the center.

In this design, they center the plasma by spinning the entire apparatus in order to drive the heavier liquid to the edge by centrifugal force - not an ideal requirement for an engine. In addition, the number of independent pistons is annoying compared to a single reciprocating piston with a number of equal length tubes between it and the reaction vessel.

There's something I find quite amusing about the notion that humans may in fact make it to the stars, but with EM drives* that are powered by what are glorified internal combustion engines. Nothing will define the aesthetic of future asteroid miners better than a spaceship that sounds like a Camaro.

* Contrary to popular belief, the science behind "flying saucer" tech is pretty much sorted and it's just an engineering problem that remains.

@Vo The character itself or just those specific images?

@PamelaDrew That didn't help at all. It just talks about the types of CC licenses.

@PamelaDrew I've checked their FAQ. It didn't say anything about characters, settings, or entire franchises.

Are there any free content licenses that can be applied to characters, settings, etc? Can you use the CC licenses for those?

@PurpCat @tadano Open Game Art has a few base models that don't look out of place for an OG Xbox game. They could probably work with id Tech 4. This one is licensed under the CC-BY.

opengameart.org/content/human-

Unfortunately, most of the other base models go for the low-poly aesthetic.

@LukeAlmighty @binkle Zuckerberg is in major damage control mode right now. Everyone saw through the bullshit with the Metaverse project to the point that even John Carmack criticized it, and nobody trusts his AI projects either.

I don't know if you have noticed, but lately he has pulled a Peter Thiel by LARPing as a libertarian in hopes to win back his trust, but nobody is buying it.

If the LifeLog/Facebook connection theory is true and he truly is a plant, then he can easily be replaced by someone else.

@PurpCat @tadano Does ID Tech 4 come with any base models at least? That's what I meant about how amateur games using it still looked like official games from Valve.

@PurpCat @tadano People have been making Source engine games/mods that are graphically comparable to HL2 for years. Most games that share the same engine also share base character models, even if they are made by different companies, so at least part of the artist work is already done.

@binkle I don't know if it's just Zuckerberg seizing the opportunity after Elon Musk shot himself in the foot or it's an attempt at reputation repair. Facebook most likely started off as a DARPA project (look up LifeLog), so it's important to them that Facebook stays relevant no matter what.

@binkle A few days ago, Zuckerberg said that Meta would be pro-free speech (whether or not it's true is up in the air) and the few Mastodon instances that haven't blocked threads are now blocking it.

@bonifartius Stux is the biggest virtue signalling admin on the entire fediverse.

>Avoid capitalists spaces. You have no right to free speech on private spaces
<"Capitalist" space suddenly claims to be pro-freespeech
>DEFEDERATE FROM THREADS!!! Instances that allow anti-LGBT rhetoric have no place in our "public space"

@wowaname He blocked us for "untagged NSFW content", which doesn't make sense because our instance requires NSFW content to be tagged. Maybe it's from the pedo raid we had on here back in 2022.

Game Liberty Mastodon

Mainly gaming/nerd instance for people who value free speech. Everyone is welcome.
