@PinochetsCommieCopter sleep on the fucking floor maybe?
@Ricotta in fact since they are actually drugs they are worse than just a placebo
@picandor @matana my old boss still texts me sometimes and asks if i need some extra money i can go do some hours at their store. also been over a year since i worked there.
it's not like she's demanding me to go and work though and i'm glad the option is still there, just in case i do want some extra cash or if i need it.
@matana yeah that's a difference in preference for sure. maybe the marketing for the original games poisoned things a little bit for the rest of the series though, because i mean you get songs talking about how fast sonic is and even voice lines like "you're too slow" and "sonic's the name, speed's my game" and "it's all about speed" then he's the fastest character in smash bros, with the second place being captain falcon who is literally from a racing game xD the dude is supposed to be the fastest video game character period.
when i play a platformer i typically like to play as active a role as possible, waiting around for stuff or trudging through slow or slippery areas isn't usually very fun. it's why people hate auto scrollers so much, because you can only go as fast as the screen allows. when you run into this sort of stuff in sonic it has a similar feeling, and it isn't just parts where you have to literally sit and wait while nothing happens, it's also parts like not being able to see what is offscreen as you go thundering through a series of loops at mach 10 and then oops, there's an enemy or spike or wall just conveniently placed right there to stop you dead in your tracks. i think the 3D sonic games are generally better than the 2D ones for this reason alone, because you can actually see what's ahead of you and adjust accordingly. i'd rather play unleashed or 06 or even sonic boom over the 2d games.
it's an expected gameplay vs delivered gameplay issue, i suppose.
@matana you can't really speed past underwater sections or these fucking blocks though no matter how good you are at the game xD unless we're talking like, speedrunning tricks and exploits like making sure you're on the exact cycle to get the best rotations or whatever. there's just a lot of waiting around that happens or really slow movement.
@matana oh yeah like i said, the sonic games can still be really good, but sonic himself as a concept just doesn't translate well to games unless it's done in a game where speed is the sole focus.
@applejack @matana sonic utopia's level design is drastically different from anything else in the franchise and actually has a good physics engine, unlike anything else in the franchise (which usually relies on predetermined paths or just has really clunky feeling physics). the level design is SUPER open, enemies are very easily avoidable, and it focuses way more on movement/traversal than it does anything else. that's kinda' what i'm getting at, sonic needs to be a game that just has a constant flow of quick movement instead of getting stuck on stuff or dying because the physics disagreed with you. or, god forbid, walking a dog around a city.
where i get into "sonic as a concept doesn't work very well as a game" though, is that even in sonic utopia, he still kind of goes a little too slow most of the time. it works for the game, definitely, because if you made him any faster in it you'd have a hard time controlling things accurately enough. there's not as much a sense of speed as there is freedom, which of course some people will value more but i think for a guy who is supposed to run the speed of sound there just needs to be a shift in how fast the gameplay actually is, one way or another.
there are always moments of sonic games that have that super fast speed, but it usually gets halted pretty quickly by something. the racing games, being racing games, very rarely have that issue unless your skill is what is getting in the way.
@MeBigbrain @matrix @d0c40r0 all these hair niggas with low testosterone
@matana basically i think sonic team needs to focus on fast gameplay with a lot of adrenaline/dopamine that is maybe even more akin to a rhythm game than anything else in the sonic franchise. that's kind of my perfect sonic game and i think it could go over pretty well.
@matana imo, the best sonic games are stuff like all stars racing and riders. sa1 and sa2 are good but they've still got some very large glaring issues.
the big problem is that you want sonic to go fast but with the way the levels are laid out there is always stuff that stops you from going fast, and there kind of has to be to make the gameplay interesting beyond just "hold right/forward and have a good time."
so when you get to the (good) racing games, you have a lot of typical racing game stuff (and drifting to gain speed which is fucking awesome btw) that helps add to the experience of "just go fast" without needing environmental puzzles or anything that kind of slows you down. or in the 2d games where there's an enemy off screen you can't see or react to because of the speed.
i think a good sonic game is one where you're constantly hitting the jets and reacting to stuff ahead of you that you can actually see. the boost gameplay is really good for that but a little bit too limited, usually in a very small area.
like, there can be sonic games that are still at least decent, but are they necessarily "sonic games" if sonic is just walking around doing menial tasks or slowly solving puzzles? nahhh if i'm playing sonic i wanna be running around at the speed of sound. going fast. i don't think sonic team has any idea on how to make that work if it isn't just a racing game.
if sonic r actually had good controls and bigger maps, add in some timing sections that feel really satisfying to pull off, with multiple paths you can take, and of course some nice cinematic moments... i think that could make for a pretty good sonic game. levels that are only 3-4 minutes long or so that help avoid burnout and let you play in small, quick bursts.
@matana i just don't think sonic as a concept works very well as a game. that's why the cartoons, comics, and movies have always been better than the majority of the games imo.
