lol i tried launching the game again and it did this, good little cherry on top of the shit sundae
well, steam won't let me post my review of half-life 2 because, even though it says i've played for 14 hours, apparently i have 0 minutes on record. so that's cool. i'll just post it here instead i guess.
Half-Life 2 is a bad FPS with a mediocre (unfinished) story and a physics gimmick. It lacks the atmosphere and diversity of the first game in nearly every way (other than Ravenholm, which is the highlight of both games). HL2 leans heavily on the quick save/quick load functionality, often throwing you into large maps with little in the way of natural guidance. The core shooter gameplay is lacking, and the conventions that would have made this game stand the test of time like the original Half-Life are mostly missing.
There are many points in the game where you're stuck, whether that means waiting around in a cutscene or being stuck in a small space with unlimited rocket launcher ammo as a bullet sponge boss tries to take you out with automatic fire. It isn't conducive to a fun gameplay environment and it happens over and over again.
Throughout the game, there are also many areas where enemies (most of which are just Combine soldiers) will spawn in waves and it isn't clear if they will keep spawning or if you can actually deal with them all. There is no structure to the gameplay loop and no signs of what exactly you're doing at any given moment. The game knows this too, because it drenches you in health restoration and ammo pickups far more often than the original Half-Life.
I can't put my finger on it, but there is something about the gunplay and weapons that just feels subpar compared to the first game. It feels inconsistent and the AI, rather than being few but intelligent, is dumb and just relies on brute force to take you out, often even spawning behind you in places you've already been to try and get off a couple of cheap shots.
If you are thinking about playing HL2 and haven't played the first game yet, I would recommend the original over this game any day. I'll look back on HL2 as a frustrating and annoying experience, whereas I'll look back on Half-Life as something dripping in atmosphere and unique diversity, from its gameplay to the guns and its areas to its enemies. There is nothing HL2 does better than the physics, which ends up being very underutilized.
did this game really just censor out the use of "fuck you"
did it really do that. with a bleep and everything
a rated m game
i'm at a loss
@BlinkRape i keep hearing people saying that it's basically a big tech demo. of course, now i'm hearing people say that xD all i've heard for the past 18 years is "half life 2 is one of the greatest and most influential games of all time." it definitely isn't influential in the fps genre, i'd give that to quake and call of duty. maybe the physics were influential, but idk i can't think of a whole lot of games off the top of my head that have similar physics stuff that aren't just straight up puzzle games. when i think of physics in fps games i think of red faction's building destruction physics, or battlefield's. or if we're going more modern, teardown's.
the first half life was awesome, i even liked xen a lot for its weird, fractured, alien landscape and the boss fights. the atmosphere in that game was great, the weapon diversity and how the game made you use different weapons all the time, the multiple ways you could approach combat encounters, and of course the old school 90s charm. there were some good environmental puzzles too, which have been pretty lacking in HL2. i'm kind of interested in checking out the expansions now. not gonna' be playing half life episode 1 or 2 though.
it feels like half life 2 is trying to be a call-of-duty-esque modern shooter rather than an atmospheric fps game like its predecessor. which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if it had a sniper, real headshots, and a quick melee attack. there are just way too many enemies in play at any given time and the game doesn't telegraph things very well. it's got these open maps but hardly points you in the right direction. enemies are coming from everywhere, so where am i meant to be going? i run out of ammo with a bunch of boss enemies around, so where can i find more ammo? you end up running around aimlessly trying to find where to go while abusing the fuck out of the quick save, only to find out that you were never supposed to kill these things, they opened up some passage for you a while ago that you didn't see because you were in cover so they didn't annihilate you at a moment's notice.
and then when you KNOW where you want to go there's an NPC fucker blocking a doorway that gets you killed because a combine soldier that spawned behind you throws a grenade down the stairs.
it's infuriating! the game is a bad fps with a mediocre story and a physics gimmick. perhaps revolutionary for 2004 but not now, not even close.
half life 2's version of difficulty is to give you full health, put you in a small space with unlimited rockets and bullet sponge bosses that can kill you in like 10 stray hits, and then give you full health again. it's the same exact story over and over, not fun in the slightest.
or, they do the same thing with the health but it's enemy waves instead, and they'll spawn behind you from places you've already cleared out. and they're still pretty bullet spongey. why does it take 3 revolver shots to the head to kill a dude? but only sometimes? because every now and then i can kill by shooting with a shotgun up close in one shot, but for every time that happens i have to dump three shots into a guy. the gunplay feels super inconsistent.
@matana yeah i just watched a video on a bunch of censored stuff, the funniest was that they changed the red blood in doki doki literature club to black xD and apparently senran kagura 7 was completely canceled/put on permanent hiatus because of sony's censorship.
@Mr_NutterButter this is how i felt about last of us
@Mr_NutterButter deviantart had to die at some point i guess?
@Jazzy_Butts michael jackson was a fucking legend. i'm not a massive fan of his music, but he was definitely a legend. he was unfortunately a product of the industry from his birth all the way to his death, and he called it out the whole time but nobody listened and people still learned nothing.

(the comments section there is pretty enjoyable)
@mochi that's a soft boob
@WolfJay it isn't some sort of conspiracy, either. they've said this kind of stuff themselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8T-3bISzHQ
