@matana that's pretty cool actually
@cyberanathema @FallenFadedLostItAll@freak.university @Nirty_Digger I would think that too but when businesses start to cut back their hours I have second thoughts. When you can't even get a pizza delivered for dinner and some fast food places are already closed, places that used to be open 24/7, idk it seems like they really just can't run the place and they're losing business. The only food options here past 10pm are in n out, del taco, and mcdonalds, all of which have an obscene amount of people going to them even at midnight because there is just nowhere else to go. I stopped by in n out at 12am last week and there was pretty much just standing room in there. Meanwhile Wendy's closes at 7pm and their lobby closes even earlier. Every grocery store around here used to be 24/7 which was super helpful but that's not the case anymore. Local and Walmart both close at 10pm and open at i think 8am.
Like I said, just from my experience and where I live it seems like there are way more jobs than there are people who want to work them, and that's very noticeable. My roommate walked into an autozone, no prior experience other than a auto shop class in high school 10 years ago, and pretty much got hired on the spot. Hell, one of my friends is trying to become a police officer in the city and there were only like 20 people in PT when apparently there are usually 200 and they only take about 20 of them. So as long as they didn't outright fail PT it didn't matter how good any of them did. That seems to be the sentiment for pretty much every job here, it doesn't matter if you do your job well it just matters that you don't fuck up bad enough.
I don't know what jobs that guy applied to, or what method of application he used, if he looked at places that were actually hiring or just shotgun blasted out to a bunch of places, but seriously... That just doesn't seem realistic to me considering my own experience. I could probably get a job at any business in my city right now if I really wanted to. Thank God I have jobs I actually really enjoy and get paid well to do. I'm super lucky to have that.
@FallenFadedLostItAll@freak.university @Nirty_Digger yeah I'm not suggesting that being a pizza driver is sustainable or anything, but you should think that some people out there would be doing it if they have applied to a dozen places and got nothing, at least in the meantime.
I don't know if my roommates and I are just extremely lucky or something but we've had absolutely no problems finding work, to the point where sometimes if a job sucks we'll just quit and go somewhere else because literally everywhere is hiring and you don't even have to be good at the job for them to keep you around, you just have to show up and not fuck up. And if it doesn't work out, the old job is still desperate enough to hire you back. My old boss still texts me sometimes asking if I need any extra money because she has plenty of hours that need to be worked. I'm not gonna do that unless I have to but I'd also be pretty stupid to burn that bridge.
I don't know if the problem is necessarily people not wanting to work, but from my experience there are places you can walk into, say you want a job, and you'll be hired on the spot, and that's not an exaggeration. Are they jobs that will necessarily be exactly what you want to be doing? Maybe not, but if you're desperate and really looking for somewhere to work then there are plenty of places to go to that will still sustain you while you look for something better.
@fluffy @Telvannichad @Eiregoat @Nirty_Digger I was under the impression that it's been like that for a while. Nobody in my family has ever actually paid off a mortgage. Houses have been bought and then sold before being totally paid off. That includes my grandparents as well. My great grandma owned her house, but that house was from like 1930 and was built by her parents; she inherited it. Unless you really knew what you were doing and made a great amount of money with low expenses, a house could take anywhere from 15-30 years to totally pay off. I don't think that's a relatively new concept. Most people don't ever actually pay off their mortgage from what I understand, shit just gets refinanced or reversed or transferred to someone else. Hell, I bet most people never actually fully pay off their car before either selling it or totaling it... Let alone a house.
If you were to buy an older house around here, your loan would actually be cheaper than renting somewhere with equivalent statistics. Of course, there are downsides and upsides to doing that.
@xianc78 see if you can find a local or relatively local shop that specializes in pc repair and the like. I got my laptop from a guy who would buy a lot of broken/old laptops from schools that were getting rid of them and then he'd basically put together all the working parts into new machines and stuff.
@fluffy @Nirty_Digger the ridiculous thing is that it's $20/hr (plus tips) for a ***pizza delivery driver***. that's all you do, you just drive the pizza and occasionally answer the phone. if i could drive i'd take up that shit in a heartbeat. that was like a minimum wage job for a long time but nobody wants to do it anymore so they have to keep increasing the wages.
$20/hr + tips is still pretty good, especially for the typical person that would be doing the job which is either someone who is pretty young or desperate for a job. maybe not in california or new york but at least where i live it's totally acceptable. if you were working full time you could totally sustain yourself as an individual and maybe even a kid if you really had to. you could rent a one bedroom apartment with your wife and kid and trade off work shifts, very easy. and a pizza delivery guy is not a hard job at all.
@Nirty_Digger the fucking WALMART isn't even open 24/7 anymore. the only place to get groceries at 4am is winco and there are like 4 stockers in there and you have to ask one of them to ring you up.
@alyx biden is cancer
@Nirty_Digger the crazy thing is that literally everywhere i live is hiring for much higher wages than they used to, places are cutting their hours drastically, and you can't even order a damn pizza for delivery at 7pm because there are no drivers. there are pizza places deadass hiring drivers for $20/hr.
@LukeAlmighty Adblocker. Checkmate AI.
@mario @Jazzy_Butts yeah I was gonna say that's definitely something you shouldn't be asking on the internet, sounds like surgery might be required but I'm not a doctor so probably should go talk to one
